A Look at the Sunshine Committee of the Friars Club

broken image

A longtime resident of New Jersey, Harvey Bell graduated from Texas A&M University with
a master of business administration. Harvey Bell also belongs to the Friars Club, a
members-only group that promotes professional and social bonds for professionals within
and outside of the entertainment community.

Beyond its activities in the entertainment industry, the Friars Club is dedicated to
philanthropic endeavors. One of its initiatives is the Sunshine Committee, which provides
companionship and merriment to children in need and senior citizens in the New York
metropolitan area. The committee’s membership is comprised of singers, musicians,
comedians, and magicians who perform year-round. They have traveled to institutions
such as Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, Lillian Booth Actors Home, Hebrew Home at
Riverdale, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Additionally, the Sunshine Committee arranges Santa visits for children in need during the
holidays and hosts the annual Christmas/Hanukkah Spectacular. More than 1,000 children
are invited annually to the event, where they can view a first-run film screening at The
Ziegfield Theatre and receive goodie bags filled with toys from a celebrity Santa.
Attendance to the theater is made possible by Friars members Ben and Charles B. Moss of
Bow Tie Partners.
