In addition to presenting regular roasts and offering ample opportunities for members to establish and maintain strong social and professional relationships, the Friars Club spearheads a range of philanthropic and charitable initiatives. One of these initiatives is the Friars Club Sunshine Committee.
The Sunshine Committee has been reaching out to disadvantaged children and senior citizens through “entertainment and companionship” for approximately three decades. Working throughout the New York metropolitan area, it has sent a variety of comedians, musicians, and magicians to organizations such as the Beth Israel Medical Center, the Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Lillian Booth Actors Home.
The Sunshine Committee also arranges special seasonal visits from Santa and sponsors an annual Christmas/Hanukkah spectacular at the Ziegfield Theatre. This event treats young attendees to a movie screening and a take-home goodie bag from a celebrity Santa.
